Overview

Public Speaking is an art that not everyone can master. On top of this art, public speaking needs something more than just speaking. Public speaking is an art of expression like acting but slightly at a higher level. Public speaking is not a cup of tea for everyone but could be. Public speaking needs confidence and very commendable command over the language.

Sometimes termed as the oratory of oration, public speaking is a process of performing a presentation through speaking to live audience. The purpose of public speaking could be an influence, inform or entertain the audience. Usually, public speaking is face to face deliberate talking of a single person to a group of listeners. The most significant feature of public speaking is to be able to persuade the audience if done in the right way, at the right place, in the right time and to the right audience.

It’s very common to have a fright when it comes to public speaking. Majority of the people hesitate to speak to the audience because it is not an easy task to do. Being in the center and being watched by everyone can intimidate anyone. But once mastered, public speaking can be a great asset in being noticed and excel in every field. Public speaking can be really helpful to those who wish to bring their ideas to the audience just the way want. No one can deliberate your ideas and think better than yourself. When speaking to the public or a large audience there is a guarantee that anything you say will be heard and taken by them, for that the orator must be able to spellbind the public and arouse interest to listen what is being told. Orator’s level of confidence, background knowledge on the topic and the command over language are a major factor that determines the impact of speaking.

Why Public Speaking Training is essential?

As said earlier not everyone master but wants to master. Public speaking has become the new proto add on to your resume and having it there can boost up your career prospect in many ways. Many people and companies have understood the benefits of having an employee who is good at public speaking. Thus, many people are looking forward to being good at public speaking. To meet the need and demand of people to be trained in public speaking, many training institutions are giving classes on it. These classes focus on building up the speaking ability and confidence in an individual.  The things that should be kept in mind while deliberating something publicly will be part of this training. Classes will also focus on the things to consider and the points that will make public speaking better.

The Importance of Public Speaking

Even if you don't need to make regular presentations in front of a group, there are plenty of situations where good public speaking skills can help you advance your career and create opportunities.

For example, you might have to talk about your organization at a conference, make a speech after accepting an award, or teach a class to new recruits. Speaking to an audience also includes online presentations or talks; for instance, when training a virtual team, or when speaking to a group of customers in an online meeting.

Good public speaking skills are important in other areas of your life, as well. You might be asked to make a speech at a friend's wedding, give a eulogy for a loved one, or inspire a group of volunteers at a charity event.

In short, being a good public speaker can enhance your reputation, boost your self-confidence, and open up countless opportunities.

However, while good skills can open doors, poor ones can close them. For example, your boss might decide against promoting you after sitting through a badly-delivered presentation. You might lose a valuable new contract by failing to connect with a prospect during a sales pitch. Or you could make a poor impression with your new team because you trip over your words and don't look people in the eye.

Make sure that you learn how to speak well!

Strategies for Becoming a Better Speaker

The good news is that speaking in public is a learnable skill. As such, you can use the following strategies to become a better speaker and presenter.

Plan Appropriately

First, make sure that you plan your communication appropriately. Use tools like the Rhetorical Triangle, Monroe's Motivated Sequence, and the 7Cs of Communication to think about how you'll structure what you're going to say.

When you do this, think about how important a book's first paragraph is; if it doesn't grab you, you're likely going to put it down. The same principle goes for your speech: from the beginning, you need to intrigue your audience.

For example, you could start with an interesting statistic, headline, or fact that pertains to what you're talking about and resonates with your audience. You can also use story telling as a powerful opener; our Expert Interviews with Annette Simmons and Paul Smith offer some useful tips on doing this.
